The primary ministry offered by St. Peter upon the Water is its three-year program for forming spiritual directors in the Catholic contemplative tradition.  A spiritual director formation program is a process by which a person of faith (a future spiritual director) becomes prepared to meet with another person of faith (a directee) in order to explore and strengthen the directee’s relationship with God. 
 
This process of forming spiritual directors through St. Peter upon the Water involves biblical and theological learning, prayer experience, spiritual deepening, and guided practice.  It is led by a team of experienced spiritual directors who teach, mentor, model, and aid in discerning each participant’s call to become a spiritual director.  It is considered a formation program because the emphasis is not on the participant being “trained” but on the participant developing into a person who is called and formed to lead others into greater intimacy with God.
 
In recognition that this process requires significant time, St. Peter upon the Water was envisioned by its Director, then-Monsignor Michael Boulette, as a three-year Formation Program.  Each three-year Cycle consists of ten monthly weekend meetings each year, following a curriculum of teaching, assigned reading, varied prayer experiences, monthly reflection papers, prayerful mentoring, and regular practice as a director-in-formation. 
 
This formation program is open to any man or woman in good standing with the Catholic Church who senses God’s call to become a spiritual director.  Because there is a need to discern whether or not the call is real, all candidates for the program must themselves be in regular monthly spiritual direction and must remain open to the on-going discernment of the Formation Team.  For more indepth information click on Program Description.
